What Not To Wear At Work
Greetings Young Professionals,
With the surge of TikTok videos promoting professional attire, I feel it largely necessary to remind you what not to wear to work. While ballet-core, preppy, and Y2K are all on trend, these styles are being improperly translated in professional wear. Men, don’t worry I have some suggestions in here for you, as well.
I am a firm believer that work clothes do not have to be boring, and you can still fully express your true style, even in dress code. However, there is a level of decorum that is not being met with these new trends. To help, I’ll break down a few trends and share how these can be fashionably translated to proper workwear.
Do not let the TikTok videos fool you, the mini skirts, although tailored, are not appropriate for an office, even with tights. But, a coat or long cardigan might save the day if your skirt is not quite long enough in the back. Add a cute belt and jewelry to accessorize, and you’re basically this generation’s Serena Vanderwoodsen.
The new trend of vests, tailored corsets, and sweater vests are insanely cute, if done properly (Yes, a shirt is required under these). Talk about taking an outfit from day to night. You could easily wear a long-sleeved white button-up, with a strapless pinstripe corset over, paired with nice trousers and loafers. Then, after work, get rid of the long-sleeved shirt and swap your loafers for heels, and you’re old-money-aesthetic approved for an espresso martini and a night out with the girls.
Men, it’s your turn. We appreciate that you tailor your suits, but be careful not to overdo it. The ultra-slim fit jacket and shorter pants are no longer in style. It is also crucial that you take care of your clothes, and then your suits will last years longer. Don’t forget to iron or steam your shirts, and get proper hangers.
Lastly, let’s talk sneakers. I absolutely think sneakers can be professional, but you have to be very careful when styling them. Nike Dunks in a fun color, or even fun material like suede, would be cute with a midi skirt. Look for brands that make more professional sneakers and invest in high-quality pieces that are comfortable, functional, and versatile. I recommend Nike, Adidas, Cole Haan, and Aldo.
